About the Event

A sensory lifestyle (as defined by Dr. Lucy Jane Miller in her 2014 book Sensational Kids), is an integrated approach in which sensory solutions are applied throughout daily life. This is different from a sensory diet, which is a list of "specially selected sensory activities." Developing a sensory lifestyle requires a deep understanding of why and how sensations impact an individual so that knowledge can be applied in everyday situations. Rather than being a set up quick tips and tricks, it works on a deeper level to support regulation, connection, and function. Sensory lifestyle design supports everyone's access to living a meaningful and satisfying life.

This content session is to introduce new information about one aspect of sensory lifestyle design: Environmental Fit. We'll cover ways to assess and adapt your environment to fit your sensory preferences, as well as tips for managing in environments that don't. If you've missed our previous workshops, you can find resources in our Sensory Lifestyle Design companion online group to catch you up to speed (a free group for all Sensory Lifestyle Design workshop ticket holders).

This registration is for the April 13 content session only. You must register for all other events separately. New content will be offered on the 2nd Thursdays of each month. Here is the planned schedule for this series:

  • February 9 - #1 - Introduction to Sensory Lifestyle Design
  • March 9 - #2 - Self-Acceptance and Advocacy
  • April 13 - #3 - Environmental Fit
  • May 11 - #4 - Supportive Connections
  • June 8 - #5 - Sensory Tools & Toys
  • July 13 - #6 - Meaningful Tasks
  • August 10 - #7 - Reflection & Wrap Up

During our content sessions, we livestream short (10-15 minute) video recordings interspersed with short periods of discussion. Content sessions conclude with reflection questions and follow up emails provide resources for continued learning opportunities.

This series of events is co-facilitated by the founders of The Sensory Nerds, Sarah Norris and Carrie Sardina, occupational therapists and advocates of neurodiversity and disability justice. The content is appropriate for individuals with sensory processing differences as well as those in support roles (such as parents, partners, and therapists). All levels of participation during the live event are welcome, and we will do our best to accommodate access needs. Please note your personal access needs in your registration or send us an email at sensorynerds@gmail.com. A follow up email and recording will be available for paid registrants as well as all registrants who attend live. Access for those who cannot pay to attend and cannot attend live will need to send a written request to sensorynerds@gmail.com for consideration.
